What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra… “What’s that?” is the question often asked by those who haven’t experienced this type of deep relaxation before!
To help you better understand what Yoga Nidra is, we called upon our Yoga Nidra expert, Sandy Kirk, trained in the Amrit Method of Yoga Nidra, to guide you through this ancient form of healing.
Literally translated as “yogic sleep,” Yoga Nidra is a meditation technique rarely taught in the West. Reclining in a comfortable restorative posture, practitioners are led through a guided meditation that involves rotating awareness through various points in the body which enables profoundly deep states of consciousness to be reached. Through this process, the tensions that plague the physical, mental, and emotional bodies are purged, vital energy is renewed, and chronic habitual patterns are transcended…leaving the practitioner reinvigorated and in a state of deep peace and ease.
Your journey in Yoga Nidra takes you to a place free of conflict, and you open a “door” to reactive patterns. Once in this field of potential, you release what no longer serves you. It is here in Yoga Nidra that you are in total alignment with what you say, think, and feel, and are transformed without having to do anything. With guidance, you only need to lie still and listen. During this time, the body becomes deeply relaxed and the mind becomes attentive and focused. Here, you are able to freely receive the affirmations creating a peaceful way of living though the message you receive while the mind is in a state of stillness, clearing the way. Resting in awareness, it is done.
In the state of being that Yoga Nidra guides you through and to, energy trapped in unconscious behaviors that manifest as physical tension in the body, restlessness in the mind, and fear in the heart are released. The mind is engaged through sequential techniques; energy and blood flow follow attention…creating deep, progressive relaxation and release of tension.
The body probably has never before felt this level of restoration and relaxation while awake due to the judgmental, busy thoughts that often dominate our way of thinking. Yoga Nidra, however, is the state of being where true peace is cultivated from within, and it is in this state where healing of the body takes place spontaneously and the life force energy is free to flow. This process takes you to the deepest level of rest, physically and mentally.
Yoga Nidra awakens this inner healer by activating the pineal gland which, in turn, increases the production of melatonin. This natural hormone helps:
