What does Yin Yoga have to do with Thai Yoga Massage?
Yin Yoga and Thai Yoga massage share many benefits.
Yin Yoga has been noted for encouraging the deep stretching of connective tissue. Thai Yoga Massage does the same, but the therapist stretches the recipient. In both cases, circulation is promoted and blood pools to the targeted area/areas. This is a positive benefit, because blood flow to an area will promote healing to injuries.
In Yin Yoga, poses are held for long periods of time, typically five to seven minutes. The muscles that surround the connective tissues must be relaxed. The focus is on releasing muscles rather than contracting them. Many Yin postures are slightly different variations of poses that many of us are accustomed to and are referred to by other names. In Thai Yoga Massage, the therapist will place the recipient into a yoga posture and then adjust and stretch the body accordingly.
One of the most important benefits of Yin Yoga and Thai Yoga Massage is their effect on health. In Western medicine, one can look at the effect the two modalities have on the immune system. The lymphatic and nervous systems are stimulated, promoting improved immunity. Furthermore, toxins are released in both Yoga and massage.
A more Eastern view will show that Yin Yoga and Thai Yoga Massage increase vital energy. Vital energy can be described as “umph” or “turning the lights on”. In Indian Yoga, this is called prana, and in Chinese theory, the energy is called qi. This vital energy flows through invisible energetic lines in the body, “lines” that are like wires sending electricity through a house. These lines have several names depending on the origin of the healing art.
In Indian Yoga, the energetic lines are dubbed Nadis. In Chinese theory, acupuncture, and Yin Yoga, these lines are called Meridians. In Western medicine, they are called Chapman points. In Thai Yoga, they are referred to as Sen lines and correspond to the connective tissue. Therefore, when the connective tissue is stretched (as is also the case in Yin Yoga), the energy lines open up and will often release pent-up emotions and toxins.
Yin Yoga and Thai Yoga Massage provide a win-win situation. As connective tissues are being stretched, strengthened, and released, the energy lines are stimulated. The overall result is overall health and well-being.
